My Idiot America: Why Can't We Get It Together? (Part 2)

Ok, we’ve been back and forth with lockdown since March.  I buckled down, even with the panic of possibly not having toilet paper, and we did what we were supposed to do. I guessed that most of today’s Americans are not used to making real sacrifices. I mean we send our sons and daughters off to wars that have been going on for almost 20 years, with the exception of those troops and their families, these wars have asked little from the American public.  Oh, wait, we have paid TRILLIONS of dollars since 2001 on these “Wars on Terror.”(Yeah, I know, we don’t call them that any more, but that’s what they are…) According to Win Without War, we have spent over 5 Trillion Dollars in the past 20 years, (https://winwithoutwar.org/) enough for our federal government to pay back Social Security, fund Medicare-for-All, and feed everyone.  But we’d rather people die then take care of others with our tax money, which brings me to the point of this writing.

First, I want to say that over 197,000 people have died here in the United States to date (https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#cases).  To get an idea, my city, Joliet, has at last count 147,000 people living in it.  So this virus in essence has wiped out my city, plus 50,000 more.  In comparison, 2,977 people died (estimated amount) on 9/11, but yet we were ready to bomb other nations, kill hundreds of people in the Middle East over the death of 3.000 Americans.  So it is ridiculous, that even though almost 200,000 Americans have died, since January or February, some of us don’t want to wear a fucking mask.  We still have family gatherings (I am guilty) and things, sometimes not wearing masks.  But here we are, in September, going back and forth on this issue. My sons are in remote learning because my area has gone up in COVID cases. My idiot Americans are the only ones that would make this a partisan issue.  Why?

Again, even in my state, this seems to be a large partisan issue.  Republican areas don’t wear masks because their political god, Trump, said it was a hoax back in March. So you all believed that he believed this.  But as of early this week, we found out that he knew this was deadly. (I plan to write more on this later.) However, we still can’t beat a virus.

This morning in my NY Times daily briefing, as today Americans are concentrating on September 11th, (see above the death count), I found the following quote:

“In the U.S., the virus erupted later — yet caseloads never plummeted. Almost every day for the past six months, at least 20,000 Americans have been diagnosed with the virus. “Europe learned the hard lesson and applied remedies,” as Donald says. “We did not, even though we had more warning.”

Do you all know what this means?  We had the most warning and as the wealthiest nation in the world, we were ill-prepared.  Well, it turns out we weren’t, it’s just this Administration decided that there didn’t need to be a federal response right away. Instead, it was seen as an opportunity to divide us.  For once, it would have been nice to come together, and maybe we could be seeing a sign for normalcy around the corner, but now I do not see that happening.

We called other human beings the “enemy” time and time again.  But the new enemy cannot be personified, it cannot be bombed, it cannot be seen, and continues to kill Americans.  Instead of our leaders being steadfast as they were in bombing others after 9/11, we find ourselves arguing.  We find that the President of the United States is a brilliant conman/cult leader. Convincing his and some GOP supporters that this virus was like the “seasonal flu”, when now we know he believed otherwise.

What I am pleading right now is that we come together, I don’t want anymore people to die, if it can be prevented.  I want life to return to normal.  Scientists say that if we’d pull together we can do this.  But it has to be all of us.  No time to be selfish or partisan about this.

On a more selfish note, last year my Halloween was ruined because we had a freak snowstorm in my area.  Now, my Halloween is threatened with a virus.  Really?  All I know is, if I don’t get a Halloween this year, I am going to ruin everyone’s Christmas. Seriously, if this virus is still around come Thanksgiving and Christmas, I will not be attending family functions.  I get tired of people dying and not caring for no reason.  So, I can enjoy my Halloween and you all can have the other two upcoming holidays, wear a mask.
