Impeachment of Donald J. Trump
For the third time in our nation's history, the people's House is voting on impeachment today. If passed, Donald J. Trump will be the third President impeached in our history. The others, Johnson and Clinton, were acquitted in both of their trials, and it remains to be seen how this will play out in the Senate. We can only guess by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's recent statements of calling the impeachment a "partisan play," and with the Republican majority, that a "trial" will be held only for the purposes of appearing to do their constitutional duty. Also, I can expect more political theater by the Republicans, as witnessed in the House, for their constituents, especially for Trump supporters. Also at work are the "conservative" or "right-wing" pundits doing their jobs for the GOP. Like today, on one these shows, the speaker proclaimed, "the liberals, Dems, are just trying to delegitimize the 2016 election, they are still mad that they lost, so you Trump supporters, get out there and get energized like it's an election." Or it was something to that effect. I only know that he will be acquitted only because of partisanship. Power and greed are hell of an aphrodisiac.
Do you, who are undying followers of this President, really believe that is a partisan game? We are less than a year away from the next election, why would ANY political party apply that strategy now? Only to give the Presidency to a ultra-socially conservative VP, who would probably be effective in destroying everything I and other "liberals" advocate for? Do you honestly believe that a sitting President asking a foreign nation to investigate Joe Biden (or his son) for political gain is a good thing? If other Presidents have done this, it was wrong, this one was caught, and he should face an impartial trial, hated or loved.
I know that the "right"(pundits and politicians) called for Obama's impeachment over and over again. Why? I am not sure. I never got a clear understanding of the reasons and justifications. If you would have told me, it was for expanding the Middle East wars and accusations of war crimes, you all might have had me. I also would want George W. Bush and company facing trial at the Hague for torture, or at the very least in Federal Court.
The few of you who actually read my blog will know that I am no Donald Trump supporter, actually, I never hated someone so much, and I really don't know the guy. My absolute hatred of the guy even surprises me. I don't remember having this kind of constant hatred toward any US President during my lifetime. Actually, since Reagan, I've been mad at the foreign policy (pro-war) decisions that have been made throughout the years by every administration since him, and yes, this includes Obama. There are issues that I can be mad at with any administration for the past 40-plus years. Speaking of Reagan, I can praise some policies that he did, one is Amnesty for undocumented immigrants with the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act.
Even though I mostly vote Democrat, in the past, I was objective about some issues with anyone sitting in the White House. (As a side note, Reagan also appointed Sandra Day O'Connor in 1981, the first woman on the Supreme Court. Though I never did go to law school, I will always be grateful that it happened in my lifetime. At the time, I was a girl of 10 and paid attention to this, and it convinced me even more that I could do anything a boy could do. Thus between that and my father, a feminist was born.) You see, Reagan was the first "celebrity" President, which was bad enough, but at least he had political experience as the Governor of California and did a few good things, a "liberal" like me can appreciate. However, no matter how hard that I try, I cannot be objective when it comes to this President. All his buffoonery and making money off the office (which is impeachable within itself, and happens is every time some dignitary or Air Force members stay at his hotels), he is being impeached with a particular phone call.
So I read the transcript, which from my understanding, is what the "conservative" or "Right-wing" pundits wanted a Trump hater like me to do. This is the part that should alarm you, especially if you call yourself a patriot:
"There's a lot of talk about Biden's son,. that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great. Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you ·can look into it ... It sounds horrible to me." (https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Unclassified09.2019.pdf)
So, he mentions Biden by name, his possible political opponent in the 2020 elections. The very simple fact that he asked this of another nation's leader to investigate a political rival is appalling and yes, impeachable. Why didn't he ask the Department of Justice? He sends Rudy Giuliani, and you all are OK with this? And the transcript released by the White House is the evidence. My god, Clinton was impeached for much less. For lying about a "blow job", yes, he committed perjury, but I wouldn't say it was impeachable. If anything, we all should be embarrassed that he was impeached over this. He should be embarrassed that he couldn't practice some type of self-control. Historically, it makes our part of history look petty and pathetic. Either way, that one is in the history books.
But to justify the current President's behavior is beyond comparison (or maybe if it did have to do with a "blow job", he would have been impeached a year ago, who's to say.). His punditry and supporters don't appear to try to justify his behavior of asking a political favor but stick to the argument that it's all partisan. I just want to hear why they thought this was justified. Instead, I hear statements like I heard this morning.
But for the love of country, it's not a hoax. I mean his White House, released the "transcript" of the call, and I read it.
I guess partisanship is all that matters. What is sad is that this will be the second impeachment in my lifetime, and what's sadder there are people happy about this one ('liberals"). I guess, I am of the mindset that this should be rare occurrence, not something that happens so frequently. Of course, I am going to say that this time, impeachment is justified. I gave my reasons. It's just so pathetic that we elected a man who thinks that it's OK to do this, as if he has no idea what is ethical (right or wrong), that he can't even try to hide it. Yet, his party is willing to support his behavior to the end, even though polling is in favor of impeachment. The Republican party appears to be "choosing party over country." (That saying is so cliche now that I want to scream, but it seems very fitting for this.) In no way, should ANY President be asking ANY other nation to investigate a political opponent. His allies need to explain as to why it was justified or not wrong. But I don't ever expect to get an answer to this.
Once Trump is acquitted, I guess this is a signal that the rules of our elections, what few there are, will change. This means I will make calls and trips as a private citizen, think Rudy Giuliani, to some Latin American countries that would like to see Trump out. You listening, Tom Perez? Also, I think I will try to get Canada's Trudeau, Germany's Merkel, France's Macron or maybe even Iran's Rouhani on speed-dial for the 2020 election. How about it?
