Yes, Even in America.
Trying to write in this political environment is such a difficult task. The current Administration is good at pointing at one thing while doing something else behind our backs. Even I have a problem with staying on one political topic. Maybe that is the "stable genius" of Trump, saying and tweeting the dumbest shit to throw us all off. However, my attention stays focused on unmarked Federal Agents/Soldiers/Officers being ordered to strike against their own. I know you all can’t believe it...But it's happening.
We first saw this on June 1, 2020, when Trump (and Barr) had U.S. Park Police and National Guard troops tear-gas protesters in front of the White House to clear this buffoon's way for a photo-op in front of a church. https://www.npr.org/2020/06/01/867532070/trumps-unannounced-church-visit-angers-church-officials
Why? If you are a supporter of this President, how do you explain this authoritarian show of force? Did you cheer for it? But it hasn’t ended yet.
On Friday in Portland, there were unmarked federal agents/officers/players that were in unmarked cars and literally snatching protesters off the street. Today, the New York Times reported:
"WASHINGTON — President Trump plans to deploy federal law enforcement to Chicago and threatened on Monday to send agents to other major cities — all controlled by Democrats... Federal agents in Portland have snatched protesters off the streets and thrown them into unmarked vehicles without explaining why they were being detained." https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/20/us/politics/trump-chicago-portland-federal-agents.html
These acts are not acceptable. If anything, they are a threat to our democracy. We cheer for other "democratic" protests in other nations, see Hong Kong / China, we and our political leaders clap and praise the protesters for their courage and call them heroes. We condemn their oppressive governments and political leaders when the protesters are gassed, detained, snatched, or even killed. Our State department, our Congressional members, and the President are quick to state their public support for these brave protesters.
And the exception is not limited to protesters overseas. Turns out if you are following the elitist/corporatist stooge and want the economy to reopen, you get to protest on the steps of state Capitals with guns, fully armed. Then the federal government does nothing. Literally, they are threatening an armed takeover or coup, well, you can interpret it as such, and you get to do so. But you protest racial injustice to stop, unarmed, with few disingenuous individuals willing to take advantage of the situation by looting, they call in the National Guard. So what is the difference? I think most of us know the difference. Most of you are probably cheering this strong-armed move. Law and order, right?
So, in China, our current example, isn't it the same for them? Aren't they just trying to maintain their version of law and order? What about Duerete in the Philippines? As a human rights activist, Duerete's tactics are a violation of human rights, but yet some of his people are cheering him on for killing alleged drug dealers, in the name of their Law and Order. When the Saudi's killed journalist Jamal Khashoggi (a Saudi national, and American citizen) was that law and order?
Law and order is not always just. Our history would show this to be true, think slavery and segregation. That was the law and those in power used policing and other agencies to maintain that order. Most recently, the banning of same-sex marriage was the law, but we have decided that was unjust. If the philosophical argument doesn’t move us to condemn these actions by the Trump administration maybe the constitutionality of these actions are enough to do so.
Well, we know that we have the right, as guaranteed by the 1st Amendment. We have the right to state our grievances and act accordingly. In the instance of BLM, it’s the state-sponsored killing of Black people. As far as what is going on in Portland, it mirrors the “secret” police of past and present oppressive regimes, some comparing the snatching of people on the streets to the Gestapo of World War II. I do know, without being a constitutional scholar or lawyer, that at a minimum, this is in violation of the Fourth Amendment, illegal search and seizure. From my understanding, this is all being done without due process or rule of law.
We should never support or tolerate policies that would encourage an erosion of our rights. Whether you agree with the protesters or not, we have a right to do so. I am mostly addressing the “Constitutionalist” type Americans, who surely cannot support such tyrannical acts by our government. Or are defending against these acts only good for the status quo? So if you are non-white, this does not apply to you? Now is the time for you all to pick a side. Law and Order? Or Justice? This time these two concepts are not on the same side.
