Killing Social Security Slowly

Forget Medicare for all, or any type of national healthcare system, after decades of trying to destroy these “socialist” systems, it seems those on the right and those who do not believe in a nation helping each other, might destroy those programs which we already have in our country. We have to keep fighting for the social programs that you would think would be untouchable, Social Security being one of them. Last week, the Trump Administration announced that it will do a “Payroll” tax holiday, which means that this is a bold step in defunding Social Security.

“Employees now pay 6.2% of their income in payroll taxes — the money is withheld from their paycheck and used to fund Social Security. Employers also pay 6.2% of worker salaries.”-https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trumps-payroll-tax-deferral-executive-order-how-much-will-workers-get/

Not only that, you all will have to pay it back during tax season, along with the COVID stimulus package passed earlier this year.  Your income will go up, but no one is changing the “brackets”, you know the tax schedule.  Funny, that this is not mentioned.  So for those of us who depend on a refund, it will be less.  Well, back to defunding Social Security.

To those young enough to maybe plan for a future, good for you.  But for someone in her late 40’s, someone like me, I am beyond pissed off.   And my anger will be toward the generations before me who depend on Social Security and Medicare.  My anger is especially at the Americans who voted for this imbecile and voted Republican since the 1980’s, when this party has made it clear to dismantle these “socialist” programs.  They never hid this fact, but would lie about it by proclaiming it to be a faulty entitlement program.  Of course, it’s an entitlement, I am entitled to get my money I paid into it.  But as I said, the Republicans, along with some Democrats, have let this system be demonized by wealthier people and corporations.  They like to talk about how it’s broken, but they are the ones who broke it.

According to Political Scientist Thomas Dye, in 1983 the Reagan Administration along with a bipartisan Congressional support, decided to tackle Social Security Reform, where they raised the eligibility age from 65 to 67, along with other measures, which created a surplus. In 1988, they used this surplus to hide deficit spending.  Simply put, our government dipped their hands in the Social Security cookie jar.  So since 1988, politicians on both sides of the aisle have claimed that it is broken. They demonize it, making you all think that you don’t deserve your money back.  Making you think that “entitlement” is a bad thing.  Now, they are finding a way to defund it, to starve it.  All because they do not want to pay it back.  They do not want to pay you your money.  State and local governments have also done the same thing with government worker pensions, that’s why they attack unions, they don’t want to pay them back.  So think about that next time you decide to bash teacher unions or other government workers.

Even in the 1990’s and 2000’s, an argument was made that we could “privatize” Social Security.  You know, take our taxed income and invest it in the stock market, like they convinced us that 401(k)s were better than pensions.  Unfortunately, the stock market goes down, so does your 401(k), etc.  Also, not everyone has a job and employer that provides retirement benefits. So imagine working and thinking you are contributing to a governmental program, that will assist you to retire, but the stock market crashed taking your money.  Well, the hedge fund managers become wealthy.  They have paid enough politicians off to protect themselves, it’s everyday people who always pay the price.

I am in my late 40’s.  I will tell you that if they accomplish their goal of destroying a system that I have been paying into since the age of 16, the United State Government had better be prepared to give me every dime back.  I do not know what to tell the generations before me, I hope you have kind family members to help you out.  I know that most of the older generations will vote for this buffoon and his party, because...I don’t know.  Some of you act like abortions and LGBT rights are going to destroy us all.  Personally, I believe it is poverty, but sure let’s cheer on the wealthy, who keep getting billions in tax breaks while we get our little COVID checks.  Your right it’s not poverty and income inequality that is destroying us, it’s our worship of them.  Yes, keep touting your anti-choice and everything else, like I said, I hope you all have family members to take care of you because a lot of Americans will not.
